The Minot Police Department, partnering with the Barnes and Noble Café at Dakota Square Mall, is hosting a Coffee with a Cop event on Friday December 14th from 9:00 am until 12:00 noon.
Coffee with a Cop is a law enforcement community-outreach program, which was started by the Hawthorne (California) Police Department in 2011 in hopes of easing tensions between the police and that community.
Noting the program’s success in Hawthorne and nearby communities, the US Department of Justice established the first national Coffee with a Cop Day in 2016, encouraging law enforcement agencies nationwide to participate.
The program has also expanded to all fifty states and grown internationally to communities in Canada, Europe, Australia and Africa.
Minot Police Officers have participated in all three National Coffee with a Cop Days as well as several locally planned events with area coffee retailers. These events have grown to include the Ward County Sheriff’s Office, the North Dakota Highway Patrol, and North Dakota Game and Fish.
Coffee with a Cop has no specific topics or agendas. The time and space is set aside for relaxed, informal, and approachable conversations between law enforcement officers and the public we serve, focusing on problem solving over a cup of coffee.
This event has proven time and again to positively contribute to the already existing good relationship between the community and area law enforcement.
