Helena Police Dept. Dispatch received multiple 911 calls referencing hearing a gunshot near a red truck in the old Kmart parking lot. Multiple Officers responded to the scene. Upon arrival, Officers located a male outside of a truck with an apparent gunshot wound.
The initial responding Officers started conducted life-saving measures for the male. Helena Fire and St. Peter’s arrived shortly after and rendered medical aid. The male was transported to the hospital via ambulance. The 48 year old male was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
What little detail I can provide here in the interim is that 2 adult males arrived at the Kmart parking lot. They had just returned from a hunting trip and one of the males was getting dropped off to where he left his truck. While retrieving his hunting rifle from the back of the truck, a shot was fired from a rifle to which stuck the man. Coroner Backeburg is handling the matter. This investigation is ongoing There have been no citations/arrests made at this time.
