Billings man Joseph Robert Daugherty was arrested and charged with Robbery. According to Court records, Deputy Gillen responded to what was a armed robbery in progress. According to the 911 dispatch logs, a male ball headed man with facial hair was “possibly” brandishing a firearm at a clerk that was in the Lockwood Verizon Wireless store.
According to the Verizon clerk, the robber stole multiple cell-phones from the store. The Clerk’s initials are A.B., she stated to the Deputies that she was showing the man some cell phones which were expensive phones.
Suddenly bolted out the door with the cell phones in his hand
Outside of the Verizon store was another female employee who was taking her break.
According to this witness, the robber tried to cover his face and to rip off the license plate that was on his pickup. This witness used her phone to take pictures of the suspect as he was trying to escape.
A Billings man by the name of Jeffery Hodson was at a nearby store front which was adjacent to the Verizon building.
This witness claims that he saw a woman chasing the robber out of the store screaming, he did not say that the robber had a gun like the Verizon store clerked claimed in her statement to the Deputies.
In fact when asked by the deputy if the robber had a gun, the witness Jeffery Hodson indicated to the Deputy that he did not see a gun.
Meanwhile, Deputy Gillen went to the Metra Park Gate #1 where other deputies had the suspect stopped and in custody. Joseph Robert Daugherty was sobbing and stating to the deputies that “they made me do it.” and that “I’m sorry.”
Once the robber was taken to the detention center for booking, he agreed to an interview that was recorded. During this interview he told the Officers that this robbery was not premeditated and that his life was going downhill. He was already on bail from Carbon County and fell into a really bad crowd of people.
He claimed that a man by the name of Dan threatened to kill him if he did not commit a robbery. Dan told him that he had to prove that he was not a square.
He stated that he never had a gun at any time during the robbery, before or after. Once again Joseph Robert Daugherty stated that he was “sorry.”
