Donald Trump is doing something remarkable.
Something no other recent Republican presidential candidate has had the courage to do: He’s making a serious effort to break the chokehold Democrats have had on black voters for the last 50 years!
Trump has made some outstanding speeches this past week reaching out to black voters. Speaking in Michigan, Trump lamented the death of American manufacturing and criticized free trade deals as he blasted Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party, saying they are taking black voters for granted.
“You’re living in poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs, 58 percent of your youth is unemployed – what the hell do you have to lose?” Trump asked the audience.
Blacks have nothing to lose by voting for a Republican. Trump also delivered the same message to blacks in Charlotte, North Carolina.
“Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party have taken African-American votes totally for granted,” he said. “Because the votes have been automatically there, there has been no reason for Democrats to produce.” … “It is time to break with the failures of the past, and to fight for every last American child in this country to have the better future they deserve.”
“Jobs, safety, opportunity. Fair and equal representation. This is what I promise to African-Americans, Hispanic Americans and all Americans.” Trump also accused Hillary Clinton of “bigotry” toward black voters, adding she “panders to and talks down to communities of color.”
Until the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, most blacks voted Republican, the party of Lincoln. But for the past 50 years, the Democratic Party has owned the black vote. Barack Obama received 95 percent of black votes in 2012. Even before Obama, more than 90 percent of blacks voted for John Kerry and Al Gore.
“Crooked” Hillary and other Democrats show up in the black community only when they need votes. They make empty promises; they lie and tell blacks that Republicans are “racist.” Hillary doesn’t talk about her plan to help stimulate the economy when speaking to blacks; her primary focus is to demonize Republicans so blacks won’t vote for them.
Democrats offer government programs and welfare to keep blacks dependent, trapping them in a cycle of poverty and despair. As a result of their blind allegiance to Democrats, 72 percent of black children are now born out-of-wedlock, and the black two-parent family is almost non existent; despite making up just 13 percent of the population, blacks commit half the homicides in the U.S.; 45 percent of black students (as compared to 22 percent of whites) drop out of high school; and the infrastructure in Democrat-controlled cities is collapsing.
Democrats work with black “leaders” to reach the black community, but if Trump wants to reach blacks, he must bypass corrupt black leaders and deliver his message of real hope and jobs directly to the people.
In December, as soon as Trump announced that he’d gained the endorsement of 100 black ministers from across the country, there were skeptics, and some who attended the meeting in Manhattan reneged on their pledge. These black pastors are more concerned about their personal wealth and status than they are about doing what is right. They can’t be trusted!
When Trump meets with whites, he doesn’t go to the “leaders” – he talks directly with the people and draws massive crowds. He shouldn’t change his strategy when trying to reach blacks.
I would encourage Donald Trump to build on his winning strategy of going directly to the people. Just as he toured the flood-ravaged areas of Louisiana (while Obama played golf and vacationed in Martha’s Vineyard) – Trump should tour America’s devastated inner cities, hold town halls and make his case directly to blacks in Chicago, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Detroit, New York City, Baltimore, Miami, New Orleans, St. Louis, Atlanta and Los Angeles.
This would be the first time most of these people have seen a Republican candidate in the flesh; it’s an opportunity to get his message to the people unfiltered and to answer their questions. If Trump does this, he will get black votes in numbers that will shock the experts.
In the past, I’ve called on former President George W. Bush and other Republicans to do this, but it fell on deaf ears. Republicans are afraid of the misplaced anger and blame that most blacks harbor toward them, and they don’t think it’s worth the effort.
As long as they have the facts, most blacks can make sound decisions about the candidates. At my organization, BOND, we’ve been holding community forums and town halls for the past 26 years to allow people to come together and discuss key issues that are important to our nation – and it has had a great impact!
If Trump continues to talk to the people directly and clearly communicate his bold plans to create jobs, improve schools and make the urban areas safer – he will get a sizable number of black votes and he’ll break the control liberal Democrats have had on blacks for half a century!
